Our Pilgrimage -- #33 - Great Pyrenees, good shepherds and not so good shepherds
The Good Shepherd
For the second time on my pilgrimage, I encountered a Great Pyrenees shepherding a flock. Each time it seemed as if the dog was out there without human intervention.
In the first encounter, the dog and his flock were on the opposite side of six lanes of traffic and he was making sure I knew to stay away from his flock.
Today's encounter was a little different. This time, I was on the same side of the highway as the dog and his flock. Another key difference was the apparent age of the dog. This one barked, panted and moved like an old dog. It kinda seemed like he was hoping and praying that I wouldn't do anything stupid and he would be obligated to attempt to defend the flock. Despite my perception of his age, he was an amazing shepherd for his flock. As soon as he saw me, he moved his flock away from the fence line and got between me and them. He wasn't aggressive, but stood his ground keeping an eye on me and on his flock.
Recently, a friend of mine posted something on Facebook and I want to dogpile on top. He went on the attack against pastors that are not properly shepherding their flock.
I do want to make it clear that Denise and I have visited a lot of very healthy churches across the US that are shepherded by amazing pastors. This post is NOT directed at you.
