Our Pilgrimage -- #22-01 -- Shama'
Please welcome the newest member of our Pilgrimage Team, Shama'!
Sadly our previous Best Furry Friend, Bella died in November. She was a beloved member of our family for 13 years.
Earlier this month we found Shama' at the shelter. We had been praying about some specific characteristics and she seemed to fit all of them.
Shama's name comes from a Hebrew word that literally means to listen. However, it has a strong connotation of obey as well. It occurs 1160 times in the OT. One of the more familiar passages is Deuteronomy 6.4-5:
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One. And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. (BSB)
In the 2+ weeks we have had her, she had made amazing progress in living up to her namesake.
However, the vet said she is only about 9-months old. As such, she still has lots of puppy energy and lack of discipline. Today's walk was the longest one we have taken and the first along a busy highway. Not unexpected, she spent a good deal of it pulling against the leash. That notwithstanding, there were a few times that she walked by my side in step with me. It was so surprising that I had to check and make sure she had not escaped the leash.
All that reminded me of Jesus statement in Matthew 11.28-30:
Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (BSB)
I must confess that I have spent way too much of my life trying to run ahead of God or turn to one side or another. I hope in the future, I too can live up to our new BFF's name.
